Back in the ‘60s, Grammy-winning songwriter Burt Bacharach suggested that “what the world needs now is love, sweet love.” Notice he didn’t say “what the world needs now is another banjo player.” The convergence of World Music and Americana has left the planet littered with “gentlemen” (properly defined as someone who can play a banjo but doesn’t). But it’s a totally different proposition when that banjo picker is also a multi-instrumentalist, audio engineer, festival promoter and music historian.
Meet Rory Modlinski, owner and operator of a huge heart and prodigious talent that fuses the high, lonesome sounds of Appalachia with the traditional and contemporary ballads of Ireland and England. When he’s not in the studio cutting tracks or developing other artists, he’s working operations at Milwaukee Irish Fest, the world’s largest Irish Music festival. “My goal in life is to spread not only my own music but the works of others, as well," he reflects. May the road rise up to meet him, indeed.
